Previews of Rulai's free sign-up process

Rulai Free Account Request

The team at Rulai decided to make a demo version of their platform available for free to people interested in trying it out. The process had to be created from scratch since nothing had existed for free users previously. This undertaking was a big effort on the part of the whole team, and my role was to map out the paths different user segments would take to get their free account, design the look and feel for the website and automatic e-mails, and write copy to match the style of the CEO who did most of the promotional writing.

Executives wanted to make sure the site's bot, Jessie, was involved in the process for a user to request a free account. I created mockups for different possibilities, starting with the user interacting solely with the bot and then exploring different ways the bot could be exposed to the user after filling out a short form.

First step: Free account request page on website

One of the project requirements was to involve the site's bot, Jessie, in the free sign-up process. I started with a short form. Once the user clicks "submit", the bot opens to complete the account set-up.

On submit, the space containing the form is replaced with explanatory text and a button to launch Jessie in case the user closes the bot. On the back end the form goes through validations to check what type of e-mail address the user submitted, which influences the questions Jessie asks to finish creating the account. For example, the questions differ if the user signs up with a free personal e-mail address compared to a work account with a corporate domain.

Next step: Example automatic e-mails

Jessie sends an e-mail validation and a final activation link. I designed the e-mail to match the updated homepage design for a sense of visual continuity, and wrote the text for these e-mails to account for different possibilities that could come up as part of the validation process.

Final step: Login page to finalize free account

To complete the final step in the process, the user clicks the activation link from the e-mail and creates a password to log into the platform for their first time. The user is greeted with familiar design elements from the account request form page. I will detail the design process for the product login on the next page.
